The City of Mechelen is taking a significant step towards addressing the shortage of swimming facilities. In collaboration with Swimwise, four mobile swimming pools are being deployed to create additional swimming capacity in the city.
Through this partnership, Mechelen is literally bringing the swimming pool to its residents. The first facility is due to open in September. The swimming pools will be installed at strategic locations, including sports and leisure centres, so that schools, clubs and local residents can once again enjoy easy access to swimming facilities.
Many towns and cities are struggling with ageing infrastructure and a growing demand for swimming facilities. With our portable swimming pools, we offer a quick and scalable solution.
“With these swimming facilities, we’re creating capacity where it’s needed most,” says Christophe Lecoque, director of Swimwise. “We’re bringing the swimming pool to the local community, not the other way round.”
The mobile swimming pools offer a flexible interim solution whilst the city works on long-term plans for the future. In the meantime, they provide immediate relief for swimming lessons and local sports provision.

Many local authorities are faced with rising demand for swimming facilities, ageing infrastructure and limited scope for investment. Mobile swimming solutions make it possible to expand capacity in a modular way, to temporarily reallocate it or to scale it up in phases.
Swimwise swimming pools are energy-efficient, thermally insulated and fully equipped with supporting facilities such as changing rooms and toilet facilities. They use natural swimming water, with no chlorine in the pool itself. As a result, they function as fully-fledged swimming facilities that can be up and running quickly.
The partnership with Mechelen demonstrates how local authorities can respond pragmatically to urgent needs without losing sight of their long-term vision. Mobile swimming facilities offer policy flexibility: they provide breathing space within swimming lessons, reduce waiting lists and make local sports provision accessible once again.
